IV.  Requirements for Participation in District 8 Festivals & Events for Schools, Directors, and Students

  Schools/Directors must be registered with KMEA.

 All Directors must be present and participate in events in order for their school to be eligible to participate.  In the event of an emergency, the director may                appoint another certified teacher to be responsible for his/her students if there is no assistant band director.

V.  All-District Band Audition Procedures and Requirements

All students must pre-register with their director. 

$5.00 audition fee per instrument

Students auditioning on more than one instrument must indicate an order of preference at registration.

Auditions will be blind, judges will be behind a curtain or partition and will have no contact with students.

Each judge’s room must have a monitor to assist judges.

No taped auditions.  Students must be present the day of auditions.

Standard audition forms will be used.

Two sets of Jr. High audition music will be used on rotation cycle.

High School prepared pieces will be excerpts taken from the current all-state band audition music.  The excerpts should be approximately 1/3 of the full all-                          state excerpts and tempo’s may be lowered if necessary.

Selected scales/rudiments must be memorized.

If a school does not have at least two students selected for any of the district bands at the end of auditions, then the director of that school may select                      students to participate in the bands to represent their school.  The students will be placed at the end of their section


VI.  All-District Weekend Procedures

$15 folder fee per student.  Must be paid before director or student can receive music

Students/parents must sign and return the “Student Rules and Regulation” sheet on or before all-district weekend

Security Guard will be provided at night to monitor the halls at the hotel.

Directors meeting will start fifteen minutes after the Friday night rehearsal begins.

STUDENT AUDITION REQUIREMENTS


 

Middle School - For students grades 7 – 8 only           

 

Wind Auditions

Chromatic scale, of 1 octave: beginning and ending notes chosen by student.

 Judges pick 2 of the following scales:  Concert F, Bb, Eb, and Ab. Scales must be performed in the quarter note/eighth note rhythm. (no arpeggio) Quarter Note = 100 min

 SCALES ARE TO BE PLAYED FROM MEMORY.

 Perform prepared music from Rubank Method Books (see rotation page).

 A short sight reading piece in the key of Bb, Eb, Ab, or F.


 Percussion Auditions:

Mallet percussion should be prepared to play scales as written on the scale sheet.  QN = 120 min.

 See the Percussion Audition sheet – rudiments should be played as written, with repeats at a minimum of QN = 96.  Be prepared to play triangle, tambourine, and cymbal etudes.

 Timpani will play rudiments as required on snare sheet.  This audition will also require the student to tune one drum to a given pitch.  Student must bring a tone producing implement and tune the drum by ear (pitch fork or pitch pipe recommended – getting a tone from a keyboard is not acceptable).

 

High School - For students grades 9 –12 only.

 Judges will pick 2 of the following scales:  Concert Pitch Bb, Eb, Ab, F, C and G.  Scales must be performed in the quarter note/eighth note rhythm (no arpeggio) Quarter note = 120 minimum.  Scales may be played in 2 or more octaves as possible.

 See the Percussion Audition sheet – rudiments should be played as written, with repeats at a minimum of QN = 120.  Be prepared to play all secondary etudes.

 Timpani will play rudiments as required on snare sheet.  This audition will also require the student to tune at least one drum to a given pitch.  Student must bring a tone producing implement and tune the drum(s) by ear (pitch fork or pitch pipe recommended – getting a tone from a keyboard is not acceptable).


Student Rules & Regulations

for KMEA District 8 Festivals and Events

 

  • ✦             Students must be in good standing with his/her band director.
  • ✦             Students shall display courtesy and respect for guest conductors and all directors of District 8 at all times.
  • ✦             Students shall abide by respective school “code of conduct/dress code” adopted by their school district.
  • ✦             Students shall be chaperoned the entire Event by their band director or appointed certified school personnel.
  • ✦             Students must attend all rehearsals during band festivals.
  • ✦             Students must abide by 11:00 p.m. curfew.
  • ✦             No use of alcoholic beverages, drugs, and/or tobacco products.
  • ✦             No males in female rooms; or females in male rooms at any time.
  • ✦             Any damages to rooms will be the sole responsibility of parent or guardian.
  • ✦             No public display of affection. (PDA)
  • ✦             Shoes are to be worn at all times during the festival.
  • ✦             No cell-phones, electronic devices, hats, food, drink(except water bottles) or gum during rehearsals.
  • ✦             Form must be signed and returned to the schools band director, who will turn it in at registration.
  • ✦             Any violation of above rules and regulations can result in immediate dismissal from the event.
